A Professional Development Workshop

Registration

This six-hour seminar will provide participants with an understanding of the dynamics that affect family relationships in late life and some strategies for intervention. Health and aging service providers often encounter difficult family situations that involve avoidance, resistance and conflict, which often prevent provision of optimal care or service delivery. Such behaviors often occur when an older parent begins to face loss of independence but the parents and children have never discussed the renegotiation of roles or expectations. Similarly, there is a small but growing knowledge base about caregiver careers. Recent studies have shown that the circumstances and processes by which an adult child comes to be a caregiver for a parent can have a significant impact on the care giving experience and outcomes for the parent. This interactive seminar will include presentation, film clips, case presentations and small group assignments.
